Metamorphosis: A 21st Century Edition

“Change is the only permanent thing here on earth.” The most common idea that we usually hear when we talk about change. When do we think about the real essence of change in our lives? When do we know if it is a time for a change and to try something better, developing the common into something that is noticeable? The most common idea that we usually hear when we talk about change. When do we think about the real essence of change in our lives? When do we know if it is a time for a change and to try something better, developing the common into something that is noticeable?
Nowadays, the Filipinos are well known as one of the active citizens in the internet world, many of the Filipinos are using different social media platforms not just for the sake of entertainment also to earn money and sometimes to become an online entrepreneur.  As we ponder on it, we can have a development in terms of business, can we also do it in the field of education? Now that we are living in modern days, where technologies are the source of knowledge already, where the industrial revolution 4.0 is the era that dominates this days. Is the Philippines are now ready to have its version 4.0 in terms of education?
As I have read an article from the Phil. Star global, written by Dr. Ma. Antoinette C. Montealegre, Vice President for Academics at Philippine Normal University, the readiness of having the education 4.0 in the Philippines was discussed in the article, Dr. Montealegre gave some salient points of catering the new way of teaching style in this country and considering the factors if the Philippines is now ready to have the Education 4.0 not just the prominent school also the universities and different school in provinces. In the first paragraph in her article she explained who are the people that need the knowledge to become globally competitive, this learners are belong to Generation Z or also known as the 21st century learners. She described the characteristics of a 21st century learners, “They are social media addicts. The hyper connected environment they grew up in taught them not only the skills, but also more interestingly, the habit to switch task effortlessly.”
She described the characteristics of a 21st century learners, “They are social media addicts. The hyper connected environment they grew up in taught them not only the skills, but also more interestingly, the habit to switch task effortlessly.” This is just a proof of how a 21st century learner learn in their own without the help of the teachers, technology is very powerful, but are these kind of technologies that we have here in the Philippines are enough to become globally competitive? This leads into another point that maybe we are all aware about the advancement of modern technologies, but these tools that we have are still not enough pursue new knowledge that other country can have. Maybe, in this question time and productivity is the key to know more things and to become technologically oriented.
On the other hand, in the side of the teachers and facilities, Dr. Montealegre raised a question, “Are Philippine schools designed to cater to this new type of learner? Do we have the teachers that are fit for iGen learning requirements? Are Philippine teacher education institutions (TEIs) producing the competent teachers the country needs?” As I was reading the article, I know that this question has a high probability to be open and asked, as a product of a k-12 curriculum, as based on my observations, the country is very poor in terms of catering the students in terms of facility, the classroom are not enough, there are also rooms that doesn’t have television or worst the absence of electricity. That’s why, government must also take charge of looking what are the things needed in school and what are the changes that must be done in the field of education here in the Philippines.
Furthermore, other countries are now very open in modern ways of teaching. In USA and in Japan they do have a good facilities in terms of learning, the usage of technology is the primary source of their new learnings, although teachers are still there as a facilitator. If we compare here in the Philippines, there are some part of our country are still into traditional way of teaching, there no wrong of having it, but I think in this period of time, teachers must also learn about how modern technologies can be cater in classroom. As Dr. Montealegre pointed out, “As Rothman advised, teachers need to be provided with meaningful, tech-focused, professional development as they transition from a traditional learning model to one that is transformational.” To be able to be this kind of teacher, there must be willingness to learn and embracing the change that is happening now in this world. Gone are those days, that the only source of information are the books, gone are those that we only have a chalk and a board as material for teaching, gone those days that the teacher are the only one who talk a lot in class. For the teacher, it is not easy to take this other way teaching, it is not just in one snap that teacher can be technologically oriented specially the experienced or the seasoned teachers. Seminars, Summits are few of the many ways to get familiarize in using the modern or digital technology.
In addition, another thing that convinced me that Philippines is not yet ready of having the education 4.0 because according to Dr. Montealegre, “There is a need to build an education ecosystem that involves not only he schools to take care of the education of our children, but also a strong support from the business sector, the community and the parents. As the saying goes, “It takes a village to educate a child.” Furthermore, “We need to level up the technology infrastructure in the country to reach even the remotest barangay in the country for inclusive education to serve its purpose. Learners from these geographically-challenged area must also benefit the Education 4.0. No one should be left behind.”
Therefore, I know that if we are not yet ready for the Industrial Revolution Education 4.0 at least we are now embracing the fact that we must live with it for us to become an innovative people and to become productive and most importantly, to become globally competitive. If all sectors from the government will lift and help one another, it is not possible for us to achieve the Education 4.0 in our country. We must accept the fact that as the time is changing, the needs of the people are also looking for a change. We must always think that change isn’t just one thing, just one time, just one big revelation. Change occurs with stages and phases. This is the Metamorphosis: A 21ST Century Edition.
